Talk: 1979
Considered to be the second most important date of the 20th century after the Russian Revolution of 1917, the Iranian Revolution of 1979 has similarly shaped both global ideological issues (Islam’s confrontation with modernity) and regional concerns (the Middle East) over the past 30 years and beyond. An exploration of contemporary archives and documents, the talk collides the intimacies of recollection with the polemics of politics across such themes as monobrows, monotheism, The Beach Boys, and mirror mosaics.
The first installment took place in Moscow’s Triumph Gallery, during the Cycles and Seasons festival, on April 9th, 2009. The lecture has since been presented at the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, the Bruce High Quality Foundation University’s Edifying series, New York and the opening lecture of the 2009-2010 Studium Generale at the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam.
